Instructions to make a toadstool…

  1. Let’s start with the stalk…dust the stalk mould with talc or cornflour
  2. Press clay directly into the mould, filling it completely and removing any excess clay from around the edges
  3. Grab a small ball of clay and dip it in some water. Press this onto stalk to use as a handle to remove it from the mould
  4. Repeat these steps to make the other side of the stalk
  5. Score and slip the flat faces of both sides and stick them together
  6. Blend the seam lines on the stalk
  7. Use the handle of a paintbrush to make a hole all the way through the stalk to help with even drying
  8. Roll out a small bit of clay to approx. 1mm thick, long enough to wrap around the stalk
  9. Rip off some of the clay to give a rustic edge
  10. Score and slip around the top of the stalk and the rolled out clay and wrap the clay around and press to attach
  11. Smooth out the clay at the top of the stalk but leave the bottom edge free so that you can use a damp paintbrush to lift the bottome edge out to give a more natural look
  12. Score and slightly flatten the top of the stalk, ready to attach the toadstool head later
  13. Let’s move onto the top of the toadstool…Roll out clay to 7mm thick – it’s best to use slightly firmer clay so that it holds its shape easier
  14. Powder the dome former with talc or corn flour
  15. Brush the clay with talc or corn flour so it doesn’t stick to the dome
  16. Drape the clay over the dome mould and firm the clay around
  17. Press the cutter down over the mould and cut away any excess clay
  18. Turn over the dome and cutter and lift the cutter off
  19. Tidy up the edges and give the dome a little twist to release the clay to make sure it’s not stuck
  20. If you’re adding any decorations to the toadstool, do this now with the dome mould still in for support – just remember to score and slip anything you add
  21. Leave to firm up a little bit then remove the mould, and use a needle tool to scratch in gills
  22. Score the inside of the toadstool head, where the stalk will attach and add slip to the scored areas
  23. Firm the stalk and head together then leave to dry fully before firing
