Instructions to make a vase…

  1. Roll out clay to approx. 1cm thick. If you want to add texture to your vase, do this now before cutting out 2 vase face pieces
  2. To cut the sides of the clay, you’ll need to decide how deep you want the vase to be. We used out clay spacers as a guide to make our sides 5cm/2inches wide. Cut 2 rectangular strip of clay for the sides that are cut to the height of the vase and your desired depth. Cut another piece for the base, the length of the base edge and the same width as the side pieces
  3. Flip one of the face pieces over so it’s texture facing down and score side and base edge, leaving the top edge as is
  4. Paint slip onto the scored areas
  5. Take one of the side panels and score along the edge and then firm in place down one of the vase sides
  6. Roll out a long, thin sausage of clay and press it into the seam where the side and face pieces meet
  7. Smooth the sausage of clay in to secure the join
  8. Attach the base piece next in the same way and then do the same again to attach the second side panel
  9. Ensure the sausage of clay is full smoothed in to secure all the joins
  10. Next, roll out another long, thin sausage of clay and firm all the way around the other end of the side panels and base piece (making sure to score the area first) ready to attach the second vase face
  11. Smooth half of the sausage of clay down into the side panels and base piece
  12. Lay the second vase face on top and smooth around the join on the outside
  13. Stand the vase up and smooth and blend all outside joins
  14. Use a paintbrush or toothbrush handle or a clay tool to blend in the sausage of clay inside the vase as much as you can
  15. Smooth over the rim and joins with a damp sponge
  16. Leave to dry completely before firing
