Instructions to make a tulip…

  1. Roll out clay to approx 3mm thick
  2. Dust the cutters with talc or cornflour then cut out 3 of each cutter
  3. Starting with the petals with the pointed tip, smooth and pinch the edges between your fingers to give a more natural shape
  4. Roll a ball of clay, just over an inch in diameter
  5. Push a paintbrush handlge into the ball to make a hole but don’t push it all the way through
  6. Score around the middle of the ball and from the bottom up to the middle of the petals and paint on slip
  7. Curl the petals in slightly and start wrapping one petal around the ball of clay, making sure the hole is at the bottom of the ball of clay and remains uncovered. The top of the ball should come up to around halfway up the petals
  8. Repeat with the second and third petals, overlapping the edges of the petals as you go
  9. Looking from the top of the tulip, close the petals in on themselves but not so that they close completely
  10. For the second layer of petals, smooth and pinch out the edges of the rounded petals
  11. Score and slip the bottom half of the petals
  12. Score around the tulip head so far, where the second layer of petals will attach and paint on some slip
  13. Start attaching the petals, the same way as before, so that the second layer petals sit in the gaps of the first layer
  14. Smooth the bottom half of the petals into the base of the tulip head, making sure you don’t cover the hole in the bottom of the ball of clay
  15. Shape the tops of the petals as you wish, curling them in slightly
  16. Roll a skinny sausage of clay for the stem, the length of the leaves
  17. Add texture to the leaves however you’d like
  18. Lay one leaf, texture side down and score and slip the tulip head in place onto one end
  19. Paint slip into the hole at the base of the tulip head and poke in the stem. Blend where they join
  20. Curl the first leaf around the stem so that the bottom part is more closed around the stem than at the top
  21. Score and slip the bottome half of the next leaf
  22. The leaves will overlap by about a half so score and slip about half of the outside of the first leaf and attach the second leaf
  23. Repeat to attach the third leaf and shape the tops of the leaves as you want
  24. Neaten up the base where the leaves meet
  25. Fettle with a damp paintbrush all over then leave to dry completely before firing
