Instructions to make a teacup and saucer…
- Starting with the teacup…roll out clay to 7mm
- Dust the teacup mould and your clay with talc or corn flour
- Drape the clay over the mould and firm the clay around then smooth over with a damp sponge
- Dust the cutter then place over the top of the clay and mould and press down to cut the clay but don’t pull the cutter back up
- Cut away any excess clay then turn over the teacop and push the cutter off to give the teapot a neat rim
- Give the mould a little twist to loosen it then gently shape the rim away from the teacup mould
- Neaten up the edges with a damp sponge and leave the mould in place
- Cut out the handle from excess clay
- Indent one end with your thumb then flip the handle over and make an indent on the other end on the other side
- Score on the opposite sides to where your indents are
- Shape the handle and leave to dry for a bit to firm up
- Paint slip onto the scored area of the handle
- Turn the teacup upside down (with the mould still in place) and place the handle where you would like it
- Remove the handle and score the areas where the slip has left a mark then paint on slip
- Firm the handle in place and adjust the shape as needed
- Leave the teacup to firm up a bit before fettling and removing the mould
- Now for the saucer…roll out clay to 7mm thick
- Dust the mould with talc or cornflour and lay on the table handle side down
- Drape the clay over the mould and firm the clay around the mould with your hands. Use a damp sponge to smooth out the shape
- Dust the cutter then place over the mould and cut the clay. Leave the cutter in place for now and cut away any excess clay
- Flip over the mould and cutter then press then press the cutter up and over
- Smooth over the edges with a damp sponge
- Give the mould a little twist and lift away from the clay
- Neaten up the edges again with a damp sponge if needed
- Dust your plate with some talc or cornflour and use the stamp in the middle of the plate and press down gently
- Place a small board or tile on top of the plate while it dries to prevent any warping
- Allow both to dry fully before firing
