Instructions to make a snowdrop…

  1. Roll out clay to 5-7mm thick, add any texture you want, then cut out 1 middle piece and 3 petals
  2. Soften the edges to give a more natural look
  3. To make the middle first, score the 2 short straight edges and paint on slip
  4. Roll up and shape so that the 2 straight edges butt together
  5. Add a thin sausage of clay on the outside and inside of the join and blend in completely
  6. Turn the middle piece so that the flat end is facing up and raise up on a small sponge
  7. Make a ball of clay, slightly larger than the diameter of the flat end of the middle piece and poke a hole all the way through with a paintbrush
  8. Flatten one end of the ball of clay and score this end. Score the flattened end of the middle piece and paint on slip
  9. Place the ball of clay on top of the middle piece and add a sausage of clay around where the two pieces meet and blend in completely
  10. Score the top of each petal and paint on some slip
  11. Score around the ball end of the middle piece and firm the petals in place
  12. Blend in the joins into the ball of clay
  13. Flare out and shape the petals as you wish and leave to dry completely. If your snowdrop needs extra support, you can use a sponge or scrunched up kitchen roll to help
  14. Fettle all over and allow to dry completely before firing
