Instructions to make a robin pot…

  1. Roll out clay to 7mm thick, add any texture that you’d like then cut out 1 base piece, 2 body pieces, 2 wings and 2 breast pieces (*remember, you want a mirrored set of each so you’ll need to flip over your textured clay for one side*)
  2. Neaten up the edges of your cut out pieces
  3. Score the back of the wings and breast pieces and an area on the robin’s body where you will attach them
  4. Paint slip onto the scored pieces
  5. Firm the wings and breast pieces in place onto both of the body pieces
  6. Make an indent, or add small balls of clay for the eyes
  7. Score and slip around the edge of the base piece
  8. Score and slip around the inside of the robin’s body – making sure to leave the top edge
  9. Roll out 2 thin sausages of clay and add them on top of the base, around the edge and smooth into the base to create a raise base
  10. Stand up one side of the robin’s body and curve around base. Blend the rest of the sausage of clay up into this body piece
  11. Stand up the other body piece so the two sides line up and press the tails together
  12. Repeat to attach the second side of the robin, carefully finishing blending the sausage of clay up into the body from the top, through the gap
  13. Blend all the joins then gently push the tail and head towards each other to shape and slightly open the pot
  14. Fettle with a damp paintrbush and leave to dry completely before firing
