Half Sphere Mould And Cutter Set (Various Sizes Available)

Price range: £7.50 through £14.50

This half sphere mould is designed for shaping ceramic pieces. We’ve used this to create our round toadstools and flower domes but this item is also perfect for creating ceramic bowls or anything needing a spherical domed base.

Head over to our ‘worksheets for clay projects’ section of our website where you’ll find our step-by-step worksheet, walking you through how to make your very own half sphere or sphere. The half sphere mould can also be used to make a beautiful flower dome or mystical toadstool.

Top tips… dust the mould with talc, roll out your clay to 7mm/0.3inches (check our listing for our clay spacers!), drape your clay over the mould, and firm around the shape. Use the cutter in the set to cut a perfectly neat edge all the way around.

This mould and cutter set is available in a range of sizes from 5cm/2inches to 19cm/7.5inches. The sizes listed refers to the diameter of the half sphere mould and each set comes with the corresponding sized cutter.

This cutter is printed in PLA filament. This item is not food safe. The photo of the bisque item is for inspiration only, this listing is for the 3D printed cutter for you to make the bisque pieces yourself. The colour of your cutters may vary at any time and may be different from that shown in the photo.

Instructions to make a half sphere…

  1. Roll out clay to 7mm thick – it’s best to use slightly firmer clay so that it holds its shape easier
  2. Powder the dome former with talc or corn flour
  3. Brush the clay with talc or corn flour so it doesn’t stick to the dome
  4. Drape the clay over the dome mould and firm the clay around
  5. Press the cutter down over the mould and cut away any excess clay
  6. Turn over the dome and cutter and lift the cutter off
  7. Tidy up the edges and give the dome a little twist to release the clay then lift out the mould
  8. Decorate your half sphere however you want. Add clay or cut bits away. Just remember to score and slip and clay that you add

Instructions to make a full sphere…

  1. Repeat the previous steps to make a second half sphere
  2. If you want to cut a hole in the sphere to add lights then choose one side to be the bottom of the sphere and pop it back onto the former. Cut out a hole large enough to fit any lights later. If you don’t to add a large hole for lights, just poke a small air hole in one side
  3. Let both sides firm up a bit before attaching the two sides together
  4. Score and slip the edges of both half spheres
  5. Place your two pieces together and use your finger or a clay tool to blend the seam where they join on the inside and outside of the sphere (add small bits of clay or slip on the inside if needed)
  6. Decorate your sphere however you’d like by adding decorations or cutting bits away. Just remember to score and slip anything you add
