Instructions to make a fuchsia…

  1. Roll out clay to 3 or 4mm thick. Add texture if you wish then cut out 4 rounded petals and 4 pointy petals with the cutters
  2. Score the flat base of all the petals (on the non-textured side if you added any texture)
  3. Roll a golf ball sized ball of clay
  4. Use a paintbrush to poke a hole through the ball of clay and move it around a bit to widen the hole slightly
  5. Gently tap the ball on the table to flatten top and bottom slightly
  6. Score and paint slip around the middle of the ball of clay
  7. Paint slip onto the scored base of the rounded petals
  8. Attach one rounded petal and curl slightly around the ball of clay. Smooth the base of the petal in
  9. Continue with the next petal, overlapping the petals slightly as you go. Repeat with the 3rd and 4th rounded petal
  10. Smooth the petals into the ball of clay and use a damp paintbrush to smooth out the edges of the petals
  11. Prop this middle piece up, upside down, on a sponge
  12. Score the base of the middle of the fuchsia
  13. Roll a slightly smaller ball of clay than before and poke a hole all the way through with a paintbrush
  14. Slightly flatten the ball on the table then score and slip one end
  15. Attach the smaller ball of clay to the base of the middle piece, joining the score areas and poke a paintbrush all the way through to help maintain the structure while you continue to add to the fuchsia
  16. Roll out a long, thin sausage of clay
  17. Wrap the sausage of clay around where the 2 balls of clay join, cut off any excess
  18. Use a flat spatula or the end of a toothbrush to smooth the sausage of clay into the join.
  19. Paint slip onto the scored area of the pointy petals
  20. Score 4 areas above the first layer of petals where the next petals will be attached
  21. Attach the first of the pointy petals and smooth in. Repeat with all 4 point petals and smooth everything over with a damp paintbrush
  22. Roll a third ball of clay, smaller than then last and shape into a cylinder
  23. Use a paintbrush to poke a hole all the way through and flatten the top and bottom. Score and slip one end
  24. Attach the cylinder onto the fuchsia, over the paintbrush to hold support.
  25. Use a thin sausage of clay to blend in where the balls of clay join
  26. Smooth all over with a damp paintbrush
  27. Curl up the outer petals slightly and use sponges to provide support
  28. Leave to dry completely before firing
