Instructions to make a daffodil…
- Roll out clay to 5mm thick and add texture if you wish before cutting out 1 middle piece and 6 petals
- Score the base of each petal
- Slightly curl the edge of each petal inwards
- Score the side of the 2 short edges on the middle piece and paint slip onto the scored area
- Rolly the edges of the middle piece together so that they join and firm together
- Blend a skinny sausage of clay along the seam on the inside and the outside, where the edges meet
- Score around the base of the middle of the daffodil and score a similar sized circle onto a spare bit of rolled out clay
- Paint slip onto the scored base and stick to the extra piece of rolled clay. Cut around using a craft knife or needle tool to remove excess clay.
- Blend the base into the middle of the daffodil
- Add slip to the scored base of each petal
- Score approx 2cm around the base of the middle piece
- Line up the base of 1 of the petals with the base of the middle piece and blend around the base of the petal
- Continue with 2 more petals to complete your first layer of petals
- Add a second row of 3 petals in the same way, but in the gaps between the first layer of petals
- Smooth the petals into the base
- To shape the petals, gently peel back an outer petal and shape as you want, careful not to tear the petal. Support underneath the petal with some scrunched up kitchen roll
- Repeat this with the outer petals and then the inner petals
- Gently pinch the top of the middle piece to soften into your desired shape
- Ta-dah, here’s you daffodil! Fettle all over with a damp paintbrush and allow to dry slowly.
