Instructions to make a small daffodil…
- Roll out clay to 7mm thick and use the cutters to cut out 2 petal pieces and 1 centre piece
- Gently pinch around the edges of the cut out pieces to give a more organic look and then slightly curl up the edges of the petals
- Use a needle tool to score lines down the petals and the centre piece for texture
- Score and slip the centre of the top of one petal piece and the centre of the back of the other petal piece
- Stack the petal pieces so that the petals are staggered and firm the centre in place
- Score the straight edges of the middle piece and paint on slip
- Butt the 2 scored straight edges together to create a trumpet/cone shape for the middle of the daffodil
- Smooth a small sausage of clay on the inside and outside seam where the 2 edges meet
- Gently pinch around the top of the cone middle piece to slightly flare out and give a more natural look
- Use a needle tool to add texture inside of this middle piece too
- Score a small circle in the the middle of the stacked petal pieces, roughly the same size as the base of the middle cone piece. Score the base of this piece too.
- Paint on slip and secure the 2 pieces together. Seal around the join with some slip then reinforce with a thin sausage of clay
- Fettle all over with a damp paintbrush and leave to dry completely before firing.
